Our Time In Year 3
Spring Term 2019
This term we have been learning all about Ancient Egypt, we began by exploring hieroglyphics and writing our own messages. During the first week, we also visited the Oriental Museum as our ‘wow’ moment, it was great- we dressed as Egyptians and even saw a real mummy! After the trip, we were very interested in the mummification process and did a lot of work focusing on this, including mummifying oranges! We put all our new knowledge together and fantastic wrote explanation texts.
The Egyptian Gods really caught our attention during activities in Space week, so we did a lot of work on this. We designed our own Gods and worked in groups to create large paintings- they look amazing! We also read Egyptian myths and wrote our own versions of the story of Set and Osiris. Next, we worked on the story of Egyptian Cinderella and wrote our own versions by changing parts of the story. We have also worked as teams to create our own Egyptian Cinderella books!
We have also taken part in an Egyptian ‘play in a day’; make shadufs in the woodwork area; created pyramids out of sugar cubes and made our own headwear!
A fantastic term!
Autumn Term 2018
During Autumn term, Year 3 have been following the adventures of Flat Stanley around Europe. We received a parcel from Stanley all the way from France, containing ingredients to make ratatouille. We learnt lots about landmarks in Paris, making the Eiffel Tower out of straws, spaghetti and marshmallows. We read ‘Paris Up Up and Away’, which led us to writing diary entries, letters, stories and even wrote about the Eiffel Tower visiting Wheatley Hill,
Stanley then moved to Barcelona in Spain, we made and ate Spanish foods and learned all about Spanish culture. We even wrote e-mails to Stanley to advise him what to do in Spain. We really enjoyed reading the book ‘Ferdinand’ and wrote our own fantastic versions. Additionally, we researched the work of Gaudi and created our own mosaics out of different mediums.
Next, we received a postcard from Stanley in Italy- we made pizzas and did some art based on the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Stanley’s last place to visit is the UK, so we focused on London. We read and completed work around ‘Katie in London’, we found out about the Royal family and had a Royal tea party to celebrate a super term!
Our Time in Year 2
Spring Term 2018
In Spring term, our topic has been Space, where the children have been learning about the planets, astronauts and aliens. Our topic began with a real alien invasion in our classroom. The children discovered that the classroom had been destroyed by an alien visitor as the children discovered unusual items and slime scattered around the room. All of the boys and girls then attended "astronaut school", which included astronaut food, measuring space liquids and investigating space rocks.
The children have taken part in a wide range of Art & DT activities including making their own space ships, paper plate aliens and canvas art pictures. The children have also explored the history of space exploration as they have learnt about the moon landing and created out very own space productions of Neil Armstrong stepping out onto the moon.
We used the story of ‘How to Catch a Star’ and 'The Darkest Dark' to start our English work based around space. We retold the story, wrote our descriptions, settings and explanation texts about space. We linked our science learning to our topics by making alien stews by measuring accurately and carried out moon light investigations.
For our second WOW activity we will be visiting the Centre for Life to visit the planetarium and to take part in a Space workshop. To plan the trip all of the children have had to write a persuasive letter to Mr Scarr to ask him to book us a bus and pay for the visit.
The children are working very hard in other lessons to prepare for their Year 2 SATS assessments therefore please ensure that you help your child with any of the homework sent by the classroom teacher. Please come and visit the classroom teacher if you would like some additional home support for SATS.
Autumn Term 2017
This term in Year 2 our topic is ‘There’s No Place Like Home’. We began our topic with a visit from Steve’s Animal Arc for our WOW activity. This led to us wanting to know all about animal habitats, especially caterpillars as we found lots of these in the school vegetable garden! We have also learnt about different animals that live all over the world such as camels in the desert and clown fish in the coral reefs. We had lots of fun creating pastel pictures based around this and making our own model boats that could be used to sail out to sea.
We used the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ to start our English work based around homes. We retold the story, wrote our own stories of ‘The Three Little ….’ as well as completing lots of description based work. We linked our science learning to the story by investigation which materials would be the best to make a house, as straw and sticks weren’t strong enough.
For our second WOW activity we went out on a ‘House Hunt’ around Wheatley Hill, in which we were looking for lots of different types of houses, as well as going for a look at the initial stages of the houses being built in the local housing development. We are making our own houses in class using a range of materials as well as drawing our own architectural sketches of our designs. We have also been constructing our own houses outside using connector sticks and wooden blocks in teams.
Our Time in Year 1
Summer Term 2017
This term our topic is The Beach, which links in wonderfully with our Thursday Beach School sessions down at Crimdon Beach. Every week half of the class leave the school on the bus to take part in Outdoor Learning!
In order to launch our new classroom topic, we all took part in a summer beach party in the classroom, where everybody dressed in their best summer outfits.
In the classroom, we will be writing reports about beach holidays through history, writing our own versions of Sally and the Limpet and reading The Lighthouse Keeper Books.
During family group time, some of the children have also been leading their own learning as they have developed a small topic around superheroes!
In maths, we will be continuing to work hard to develop our calculations and handling of numbers. The children are also really enjoying learning how to tell the time!
We have recently also taken part in Science week and the children really enjoyed themselves as they took part in some challenging scientific experiments!
Spring Term 2017
In Year 1, we have been learning all about the Weather. During this topic we have been examining the weather at different times of the year in Wheatley Hill. We also discussed what the weather is like in different countries - we compared weather in different countries using our knowledge of our own holidays. We also learnt about the seasons and night and day - we even covered the classroom windows to make it dark so we could study nocturnal creatures!
During our Family group sessions, where the boys and girls take the lead in their own learning, one group decided to learn all about pirates and the other group spent time learning all about the police. At the end of half term, there was only one way to celebrate all the hard work that the children had done and that was to have a "Pirate Police" party.
Autumn Term 2016
This term our topic is "Animals". In our first half term back at school, we read and expanded our knowledge on animals found in a range of different traditional tales. We chose Little Red Riding Hood, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Gingerbread Man to look at in detail and our floor book shows all of the wonderful tasks we took part in.
In our second half term, we decided to look more at our own pets and wild animals from different continents.
We have already had a visit from Archie (Miss Rodden’s dog) and we can’t wait to find out more about animals from around the world and explore the different continents!
In School, we take part in some wonderful adventures and go on amazing trips. Please use the link below to see pictures from our school picture gallery of some of the different things that we have been getting up to.
